The clean and pure drinking water is one of the biggest challenges in India. So, water business has become one of lucrative business in India. Now, Belgium-based world’s biggest beer brewer Anheuser-Busch In Bev is also set to start Water ATMs in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in regions where people do not get pure drinking water soon. Indian subsidiary headquartered in Bengaluru and an NGO Jaldhaara Foundation associated together for this project.
AB InBev Director Legal and Corporate Affairs Pooja Bedi told that, these Water ATMs will provide potable water at a low cost. People will get 20 litres water for Rs. 8. The money collected by the people will be used for operational expenses. She further added that, four water ATMs are already installed at locations – Binnypet, Kadugodi and Vanarpet in Bengaluru. The company has chosen areas in Andhra Pradesh to set up Water ATM where, no clean drinking water available and are searching for more such areas.
Now, foreign companies are also identified golden opportunities in water business in India. If you are also willing to start your own Packaged Drinking Water Plant, then attend our next live training…
To solve the problem of water shortage, after NDMC, South Delhi Municipal Corporation has started a project to install 100 Water ATMs. LG Anil Baijal instructed to civic bodies to ensure that Water ATMs are installed in Delhi as early as possible and are maintained properly.
Senior official said that, People will get (250ml) chilled water for just Rs. 2 and for filling full bottle of they need to pay Rs. 5 per litre. The paper glasses will be available at every Water ATM. There was a very good response for the WaterATM in SDMC and about 300 glasses of water are sold per day. So, officers have decided to expand this service. This machine has a capacity of 5000 litres of RO water.
There is a rule for accumulating waste near Water ATMs; vendor has to ensure that the premise of water ATM must be clean. The place for the ATM will be decided by the SDMC, officials have identified 20-25 regions in the four zones. The Delhi govt. hopes that installation of Water ATMs will solve the problem water shortage soon and people will get clean and affordable water at lowest cost throughout the city.
In India, Water ATMsare now considered as a reliable, consistent and affordable medium for providing safe water. Chief Minister of Assam inaugurated first Water ATMin Assam at Kodomoni in Dibrugarh.
The Telegraph article says that, the government has set up this project, with the help of the public health engineering department and district administration with an aim to provide safe and clean Drinking Water to the poor at a low cost. The outlay for this project is Rs 9.74 lakh.
Chief Minister has declared that this is a pilot project and will be extended throughout Assam. Unlike ATM, This Machine will disburse water upon the use of a smart card. A technique of semi-permeable membrane is used in this machine to provide clean Drinking Water.
The capacity of the plant is 10,000 litres per day, which will dispense 500 jars of 20 litres each. The Water ATM will help to fill the gap between demand and supply of safe Drinking Water for the common man. In Assam, at present, 48 households have direct water connection under the Kodomoni water scheme but soon almost 200 households will get benefit from Water ATM.
As an initiative of the Railway Board , IRCTC is on a drive to install newer & newer Water ATM machines on various stations. Recently , Tiruchi Station in Tamilnadu was equipped with 2 ATMs on 2 of its platforms. Water will be served at Rs. 5/- per litre over here for 1 Ltr Bottle (if you bring your container).
The prices look much higher
The price at which water is sold looks very high. It is Rs. 5/- per litre. Considering that there is no packaging involved & no distribution network; it looks very very high. Just look at the Packaged Drinking Water Cost of Production. Keep in mind that it is Packaged Drinking Water, just have a look at it here :-
Now , if you look at the chart , you will see that .. Out of the total Operating Cost of Rs. 4.29 ; Major Cost ( Item 1,2,3,6) Don’t contribute to the Vending Machine Model. So Remains just the cost of (4,5,7) . It comes to 0.31 Rs; that’s 31 Ps per Litre , Add Chilled Water operation cost. Should never be more than 75 Paise per Litre.
There is no Distribution Chain
Considering that there is no distributor chain & other overheads involved as in case of Packaged Drinking Water Distribution and no involvement of the BIS (what is BIS?). Again, the Place & Electricity is supplied by railways only.So this cost is also born by railways. Looking all these factors , the cost is very high.
Today, in India, most of the bottled water is packaged in PET bottles, it is a version of Plastic only. Though it’s claimed that the PET is recycled ( and it is! ), but this hasn’t become a global or national trend still. There has been no collection and recycling ecology observed as far as the PET bottles are concerned. But the plastic continues no be the no.1 enemy for the environment, till a system similar to the paper industry gets established. More and more people, universities, institutions will continue to ban plastic, at least the Bottled Water.
But there lies equal opportunity
Tentatively, you can say that the “Packaged Drinking Water” as it’s called in India or “Mineral Water” colloquially; looks to have a remote threat. But this threat is for the “Plastic Bottled” water, not otherwise. You can do Glass Water Bottling as some companies are doing it today. But Glass Bottling is expensive and can’t replace the general packaged drinking water bottle. Having said this, there opens up challenges for an entrepreneur to grab an opportunity in this Business.
Your Business is Pure, drinkable Water, not just “Packaged Drinking Water”.
As an entrepreneur, you have sighted an opportunity in Pure Water. I mean, an entrepreneur always looks for what problems he can solve for masses or any niche community. Here, the Problem is: People don’t get good quality, Pure water for drinking & thus you thought the Pure Water. And since it’s mostly seen to be used in Bottled form; you thought ofBottled Water or Mineral wateror more precisely: Packaged Drinking Water. And thus you hunted for Packaged Drinking Water Plants.
Where is the opportunity?
If Bottles are going to be future threat, what are the other options? See… We want to offer PURE water to people. If pure water can’t go to people, People can come to collect Pure Water. And this is how the community Pure Water Stations Idea came into existence. And to regulate & monitor the usage of this Pure Water ( It has a cost ), some quantity regulation came into picture & it is Money based regulation. Some Particular charges for some particular amount of water. And thus the concept of a Water ATM. This is the opportunity.
A visionary leader in Maharashtra State, Hon. Shri Dilipsingh Valse Patil saw that the residents of this village will get better & purest form of drinkable water. He also saw that these the overall health standard of people, because of tyhe better quality of water will improve. He decided to install an RO purifier system at his village. The Bhimashankar SSK donated the system ( CSR for them), the Village Gram Panchayat gave them land to install the plant. They ( Bhimashankar SSK ) got a Water Purification System, well compatible to the Mineral water Plant you see for Packaged Drinking Water ( assuring the drinking water quality ). In addition, the Gram Panchayat also hired a special man on their Payroll, who maintains the whole plant, and also observes other office tasks at the Centre.
How do the villagers benefit?
In fact, the Village Gram Pachayat runs this plant from 2014 itself. It was only some 2 months back, when they also installed an ATM system ( just like the Money ATM ) for water. The villagers come here with their empty cans; hold the Card in front of the ATM Panel till the can gets filled. With every liter filled, the system deducts 50 paise from the balance on the Card. Maximum limit to fill is Rs. 500/- and minimum is Rs. 10/-. The special man, Mr Vaibhav Valase Patil, looks not just after the Mineral Water Plant maintenance, but also the other office tasks such as Cards issue, top up of balance etc.
Now, it is very easy for the villagers of Nirgudsar to just visit the Water ATM Centre with their empty cans and the card. The system has many advantages:-
The Water is very pure, at par with the Bottled Packaged Drinking Water.
It is very cheap: Costing just 50 paise per litre compared to 15-20 Rs. A litre.
The villagers need not buy the cold water jars, whose quality is not assured.
The quality of equipment is assured, as bought through the Sugar Mill.
No Plastic generation, complete Eco friendly system.
The following Video will explain you the whole process:-
Can this Idea work for an Entrepreneur?
Yes, very much. If you belong to a small village like Nirgudsar, or resident of a housing society, you have a fixed number of residents who can be your consumers. You can request the society for the space required to install a Water Treatment Plant. Then you can either buy a Water Treatment Plant on your own, or can tie up with a Company for CSR fund and get your plant. Now, you can issue RFID cards to the consumers & supply them water through your own ATM system. This is the Business Idea. How the balance is topped up etc can be learn from this Video:-
If this inspires you, you can assume that you are on the right path to do it! Why not start your entrepreneurship journey today itself?
Rail Neer is the brand under which, packaged drinking water is been sold to railway travelers in India. The brand is owned by the govt. Inc IRCTC. It has 4 packaged drinking water plants across the country. One of them is also placed at Ambarnath, Mumbai.
75% Shortage at present
Some days back, it was observed that the trains also sell all other mineral water brands besides rail neer. So the railway came out with a veto on all other brands. No other brand can sell its water on Railway Station. It’s a good News, right? not so. The overall demand of 50 lakh ltrs was met by combining all these supplies. Now the rail Neer supplies just 1/4 th of that.
Travelers are suffering
Who’s to face the music as a result? It’s ttravellers, like you and me. They say that the shops out of the railway premises are getting a huge demand for other brands. So directly or indirectly, people needs are getting served. Now IRCTC should not come out with a rule “Carrying Any other water than Rail Neer is a crime”. But it won’t be. Because we live in India, not in China.
IRCTC wants to keep the supply under their control for good reasons obviously. To maintain the quality and health standards and the price under check. But just 4 own plants across the country is really disgusting. Possible solutions can be
Setting up small plants at various stations like just 1000 lph plants
This will offer great opportunity for various small town entrepreneurs and cope up the shortage situations as well. The average plant capacity will reduce so More equal distribution throughout. It will also bring down the capital investment.
Establishing just the pure water booths. People will bring own bottles.
This will not only reduce the plastic consumption down, but also bring down the capital cost as there won’t be any need to have expensive energy consuming machines like bottle blowing machines, filling machines.
Establishing Water ATM inside trains itself.
It is possible. Install an ATM in the train in alternate coaches. Get water from halting stations. Travelers can withdraw water at their will.
If you too can come out with possible creative solutions, please comment. Govt of India is currently in a very receptive mode.
Water ATM is just not a trend, but need of the hour
In a very small village called Nirgudsar, taluka Ambegaon, Pune District, Maharashtra, a project called Bhimashankar Jalshuddhikaran, a water ATM machine was installed. The concept is very simple and straight. The consumers will pay 50 paise per ltr for pure and cold water. The consumers will be given prepaid cards from the center itself of balance 100 to 5000. It, the water ATM even tracks the balance water level inside the tank and an emergency communication system as well if the level goes below.
It currently needs electricity. But shortly, it will be shifted to solar power to escape from load shedding issues.
More and morethese kind of efforts will be the ideal Enterprises in future. We recommend new entrepreneurs to think in this direction instead of the traditionalmineral water plant.
It’s not just bottled water always.Yes. I mean to say, whenever we think of mineral water plant or a packaged drinking water plant, we mainly think of :
But today it has gone much beyond that. You can setup community Water stations. In fact many organizations also can be helpful to you in this effort.
What CSR can do for mineral water plant business :
CSR is CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY program. Under which every company above100 CR turnover, is mandatory to spend 1-3% of their earning on social cause. Idea 💡 is to catch hold of the key personnel looking after this and getting funds sanctioned for your local community mineral water plant.
