According to the article in the newspaper Times of India, Around 239 million people in 21 states, across 153 districts are getting drinking water contaminated with high levels arsenic. UP is leading in no. of people having consumption of arsenic contaminated water with over 70 million people.
The water contaminated with high level of arsenic has very bad effect on health of human being. The World Health Organization (WHO) has given a warning that long term consumption of arsenic-contaminated water can lead to arsenic poisoning or arsenicosis, with several kind of diseases and disorders. The WHO’s guideline value is 0.01 mg/litre for acceptable level of arsenic in drinking water and the arsenic level found in the groundwater of these 153 districts is above this benchmark. The WHO also said that, in case, if alternative source of water is not available, arsenic of 0.05 mg/l could be used as a permissible level in these districts.
Sources of Arsenic Contamination in Drinking Water:
The one of the major source is arsenic rich rocks, through which drinking water filters. Mining and industrial activities are also responsible for arsenic contamination in drinking water. Crops irrigated with arsenic contaminated water and foods prepared using such water are sources of exposure. The other dietary sources of arsenic are Fish, shellfish, meat, poultry, dairy products and cereals.
